Austin, the self-proclaimed "Live Music Capital of the World®," has the most live music venues per capita of anywhere in the country, almost 200 in all. Those who enjoy and support Public Broadcasting in the border region are probably familiar with Austin City Limits (ACL), a live concert series that has contributed greatly to Austin's status and widespread recognition.

Austin City Limits

Austin, Texas
Austin City Limits, perpetuating the careers of talented musicians in multiple genres, is celebrating 35 years of popular music presentation - now the longest running music series in the history of American television. It is the only television program ever awarded the National Medal of Arts by the White House, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum as a Rock and Roll Landmark.

The first ACL, starring a local talent, Willie Nelson, aired in 1975, and the first full season in 1976 kicked off with Asleep at the Wheel. The two groups joined forces in 2011 to initiate the 35th season of the program. The series airs locally on KRWG and KCOS on most Saturday nights, broadcast in high-definition and 5.1 surround sound.

In February 2011, a change of venue occurred as ACL moved from its long-time recording studio on the University of Texas campus to the state-of-the-art Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater in downtown Austin. ACL Live at the Moody Theater is the venue that hosts both the ACL recording sessions in front of a limited audience for Public Broadcasting and an additional hundred or so ACL Live concerts in front of a full audience.

The new theater has a capacity of 2700 and is one of only two dedicated live music venues in the country built to LEED green-building standards. It is part of a project called Block 21 featuring residential, hotel, office, retail and restaurant space and a street-level plaza located in Austin's 2nd Street restaurant and entertainment district. You can't go wrong by planning a lively weekend in downtown Austin.

While on the subject of music in Austin, an outgrowth of Austin City Limits is…you guessed it, Austin City Limits Music Festival. The annual three-day music extravaganza takes place on 46-acre Zilker Park, hosting 130 artists from around the globe performing on eight stages. It is held in September and tickets sell out months in advance. If you are interested, start checking the web site after the first of the year. ///
