An afternoon fundraiser benefiting Operation H.O.P.E (which stands for Helping Other People Endure) was recently held at the Doubletree Hotel in downtown El Paso. Nationally known stand-up comedian Gabriel Iglesias was the guest of honor as well as recipient of the organization's Beacon of H.O.P.E award. The annual award, which is given to individuals who provide hope during times of need, was presented to Iglesias on behalf of the non-profit by cofounder Angel Gomez. Previous recipients include, Pastors Joel & Victoria Osteen, ABC news anchor Estela Casas and LULAC Project Amistad CEO Xavier Banales. The comedian's appearance at the fundraiser helped bring in an estimated $5,000 to help residents of the local community who are underserved and have been affected by the recent downturn in the economy.

Several other awards were also bestowed upon the "Fluffy" comedian prior to his sold-out evening performance at UTEP's Don Haskins Center. Iglesias was presented the "Key to the City" by Sheriff Richard Wiles who filled in on behalf of El Paso Mayor John Cook. Wiles also presented Iglesias with an embroidered blanket from the El Paso County Sheriff's Department, which prompted the comedian to jokingly proclaim "I've never been given a blanket by a man!" County Commissioner Sergio Lewis and Dora Oaxaca then honored the funny man with a Commissioners Court Resolution. And finally Lucio Glenn, a field representative for Congressman Silvestre Reyes, recognized Iglesias for his service to the community with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition. ///
